Euthanasia

Providing support, guidance, and compassionate care during a difficult time.

Euthanasia is one of the most difficult processes you will go through as a pet parent. Emotionally, it will be taxing for everyone in your family. Your cherished pet has been a part of your family for years and it is sad to consider them leaving forever. As pet owners ourselves, we understand the deep bonds that are formed with our loyal companions, and why saying goodbye leaves us with heartache that stays with us long after our pets have crossed the rainbow bridge.

Why would euthanasia be recommended for my pet?

Euthanasia is not an easy decision to make. Our veterinarians recommend euthanasia when a pet is terminally ill or when treatments are no longer effective at treating their ailments causing their quality of life to decrease. As doctors, we can perform tests and assess when your furry friend is in chronic pain or when their quality of life is extremely low. As your pet’s guardian, you pick up on their habits and behaviours but when their quality of life is poor they start to show signs like being less active, a loss of appetite and being less affectionate. If they are in constant pain a veterinarian can recommend pain medications. But as their condition worsens, their health will continue to decline. If your pet is showing signs of decline, speak with one of our veterinarians to discuss your options. Please call 416-489-8387.

What happens during euthanasia?

Euthanasia is a quick procedure to put your pet to sleep permanently. During euthanasia medication is given through an injection. This drug stops their heart, lungs and brain function immediately. It takes only a few minutes to be completed and your pet doesn’t feel any pain.

How can I prepare for the procedure?

When your pet is scheduled to be euthanized you should spend extra quality time with them. It is normal to feel like you haven’t spent enough time with them even after all the happy years. Quality time with your pet before the procedure will also make them feel more loved in their final moments, and allow other members of your family to say goodbye.
