Laparoscopy is a less invasive alternative to open surgery. During laparoscopic procedures, a smaller cut is used to explore your pet’s body which usually means recovery time is shortened. Laparoscopy is sometimes used as a diagnostic tool when your pet is showing signs of an illness. This form of surgery can be used to perform both simple and complex procedures.
As with all surgical procedures, we perform pre-anesthetic testing, this allows us to determine how much anesthesia to use on the patient. From these tests, our doctors can understand how well your pet will respond to the procedure. Once we’ve established that your pet is a good candidate for surgery we go ahead and administer the anesthesia. Throughout the surgery, your pet is connected to machines that monitor its vital signs. A small incision is made on the abdomen and the veterinarian inserts a very small camera. With the camera, they examine the organs and use it as a guide while using surgical tools.
